Portrait #2
In Korean, the word "face" is called ‘Earl-Gul’. ‘Earl’ means a spirit and ‘Gul’ means a tunnel, which means spirit tunnel on the head, the spirit goes in and out through Earl-Gul. So, they named it as a spirit’s pathway of the body. All emotions of a person are conveyed through his or her face, so Koreans' choice of the word "face" is mysterious beyond philosophical thinking.
There is a saying that the eye is the window of the mind. I think Koreans think that the spirit came in and out through the eyes of a person, the window of the mind. No matter how freely I imagine, I don't think one’s spirit will go in and out through the ear.
So, they named it as a spirit’s pathway of the body.
I have spent a quite long time on how to express an object’s eyes as I work on the portrait. I am often trying to make eye contact with the portraits. And, when I look at the portrait's eyes to read anything if it is existing, the portrait's eyes speak to me at some point. “You don't have to touch on my ‘Earl-Gul’ anymore, you are completed on me.”
